Princess Nokia—New York rapper Destiny Frasqueri—released her highly anticipated new mixtape A Girl Cried Red this year via Rough Trade Records. The self-described “emo mixtape” can be heard here, and follows her critically acclaimed 2017 rap opus 1992 Deluxe. The video for first singleYour Eyes Are Bleeding” was directed by Milah Libin and Frasqueri, and features footage from the last two years of touring behind 1992 Deluxe:

The shape-shifting emcee has been releasing music via YouTube and Soundcloud since she was in high school and catapulted herself to the next level with 1992 Deluxe—selling out venues across the globe and steadily gaining tens of millions of streams. A Girl Cried Red showcases another fully formed side of Destiny that still taps into the uncompromising feminist ideology of Princess Nokia, and will undoubtedly cement her place in the alternative underground as well as the hip-hop world.

The mixtape draws on influences as varied as the introverted acoustic sounds of Elliott Smith to the bombastic pop-punk energy of Paramore. Read more about the mixtape’s inspiration via Dazed.
